BNE are currently pursuing rates appeals for approaching 60 retail clients in Kettering town centre for reductions as a result of the large number of empty shops.
Business rates are reassessed every 5 years, with the last revaluation taking effect on 1st April 2005. However, if physical changes take place to a property or its locality during the 5 years, an assessment can be further appealed to reflect these circumstances. This is known as a Material Change of Circumstance Appeal and the high level of empty shops in the town centre is just such a circumstance.
‘There is a very strong case for reductions in my opinion’ commented Chris Noble, whom shop keepers should contact if they wish to be included in the current round of appeals.
